At UbiComp 2014, Seattle, USA (September 13)

Advances in mobile systems are providing unprecedented opportunities for interdisciplinary research combining social science and computing as they enable unobtrusive, large-scale, and longitudinal studies of human behaviors and social interaction. Mobile computing technologies are offering new observational study methods that can overcome the limitations of traditional ones such as interviews, surveys, and lab studies, and also allowing active experimentations that use real-time behavioral and psychological interventions. Understanding and applying social science theories as well as developing new methodologies for this emerging mobile environment will be the key to fully take advantage of such opportunities.

The ACM Workshop on “Mobile Systems for Computational Social Science” brings together researchers working at computer science and social sciences to explore and discuss recent advances, radical ideas, and hands-on experiences in designing and evaluating new types of mobile systems and advancing social science studies. This is the third edition of the workshop, continuing the success of the two previous editions which brought researchers from various areas including computer science, psychology, sociology, political science, communication (the first edition was (http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/events/mcss2012/) co-located with ACM MobiSys’12 and the second (http://events.cs.bham.ac.uk/MCSS2013/) was at ACM UbiComp 2013). This year we expect great interest not only from the researchers already actively working in this area but also from practitioners in industry and the mobile and social computing communities as a whole.

MCSS 2014 will be a one-day workshop and include paper and keynote presentation from social scientists. Please contact mcss2014.contact@gmail.com if you have any suggestions or questions about submission or attendance.
